The Yellowjackets Wowed the Crowd at the Jazz Kitchen

The Yellowjackets play the Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis on Jan. 8, 2016.
On Friday night, Jan. 8, 2016, Indianapolis jazz fans got a rare opportunity to watch an iconic group, the Yellowjackets, in the small club setting of the Jazz Kitchen. It was a treat. Celebrating their 35th year, the Yellowjackets seem to get better with time. They played two shows at the Kitchen. The first showed featured a packed house of enthusiastic fans and group received several standing ovations. The set featured mainly newer works and was a bit short, at an hour and twenty minutes, but the group gave the fans their money’s worth. After they ended their set the crowd gave a sustained ovation and the band came out for an encore. We were all smiling as we left the club that night.

Logan Brill at the Keller Bar

Logan Brill sings at the Keller Bar in Indianapolis.
Nashville, Tennessee-based singer/songwriter, Logan Brill took the stage at the Keller Bar (inside the Rathskeller) on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, in Indianapolis. Brill has a wonderful range, in that she can sing laid back and light tunes with beauty and clarity and then surprise you by belting out a blues number with substance.

As you’ll be able to tell from this clip, Keller Bar is a challenging venue. The room is long and narrow with two rows of tables and chairs separated by a single aisle, with the stage on one end and the very crowded bar on the other. At times it can be difficult to hear the singer over the din of the crowd.

Brill performed a strong pair of sets with covers of popular songs she made her own, as well as a solid group of originals. She covered everyone from the Rolling Stones to Stevie Nicks with equal poise.

The stunning Brill did stretch credulity a bit by singing Dolly Parton’s signature “Jolene”. If Jolene can take Brill’s man away just because she can, all I have to say is I’d really like to meet Jolene.

Here she sings a cover of John Prine’s ‘Make Me An Angel’.

Laurence Hobgood Quartet feat. Ernie Watts at the Jazz Kitchen

One of the best jazz shows I've ever had the privilege to see. Amazingly Ernie seems to be gaining energy in his playing as he ages. An enthusiastic crowd was on hand to watch the set. Laurence Hobgood (piano); Ernie Watts (Sax); Jared Schonig (drums); Matthew Rybicki (bass). Recorded at the Jazz Kitchen, Indianapolis, April 9, 2012.
